Naughty naughty

Remember that amazing, labor intensive buttermilk syrup I mentioned in the last post? The one I make special from scratch for Christmas morning? Well, after the kids had opened their gifts, and were so busy playing with them, Braden decided to go to the gym, and I set the kids up with a movie so I could grab a shower. Well, mid shower, I was handed this little beauty.
Apparently, Graham tried to get the leftover syrup off the counter, and dumped it over his head, my (fairly newly upholstered) kitchen chair, floor, and socked feet tracked it across the carpet. Braden came home to the mess, and quickly scooped up the guilty party and brought him upstairs to get cleaned off. He didn't look sorry at all, he came in licking the syrup off his arms with a big grin.

Christmas 2013, Part one: early Christmas at home

Our lovely elf on a shelf named Dexter, was able to pull in a favor from the big guy in red. Turns out, Santa let him give us our gifts early because we were going to be out of town for Christmas Day.
It was a total surprise for Eve, Graham doesn't really get the Christmas thing yet, so he was just thrilled there was paper for him to rip apart. He saw a gift wrapped as a ball and he was immediately in heaven. We first had our traditional Christmas breakfast, homemade pumpkin pancakes with buttermilk syrup. It's so rich and delicious, great way to start the day. It was such a great morning opening gifts and getting to see the kids' reactions, they are at such great ages, so full of energy and enthusiasm. To top it off, after all the festivities we got to go see Santa Claus, in the flesh! We got to thank him for the nice presents and letting us celebrate early.

Typical kids, the best thing they got was the boxes from their plasma cars. They spent all afternoon coloring them and making them into rocket ships. It was so fun to watch.

They don't need perfect.

I am thankful for a bad day. I realize how weird that sounds. Thankful for a bad day. But just past week, I had a really bad day. From the second we got out of bed, it was just downhill.
My Sunday school lesson didn't go well. But I can shake that off, you win some you lose some, all you can do is prepare and do your best. But during church Graham was incredibly cranky, and all over the place. I was struggling with the children, feeling overwhelmed. Church is always tough, but I usually get some quiet time in the afternoon to gather myself. Well, since we had such a busy weekend, I was frantically doing the 4 loads of laundry, cleaning the kitchen that had yesterday's breakfast dishes and food stuck on the stove, and tying to tidy up our living area. I am so thankful for Braden's calling, I love the opportunities it gives him to serve and excercise his priesthood.
But days like last week when I am throwing made-from-scratch goodies into the mix for his home teaching families within the hour, be ause he's been at meetings and such since the break of dawn, I sometimes feel the pressure.
After an exhausting afternoon and still feeling like I'm drowning in housework and kids, I found myself getting short-fused. Graham was extra needy, and instead of putting everything aside and giving him the snuggles he needed, I was getting cross at him tugging and whining at my feet as I'm preparing another dish to take to a friends home. I had hinted that I didn't want to go, but Braden was really keen on going, so the cookies I made. The kids were whining, and I was stressed out so the whining was making me feel bad for neglecting them. But what do I do?
I broke. I cried, and Eve was so concerned about my crying. "Mom, why is there a tear?" Braden finally returned from home teaching, and found me. He gave me a hug and asked me what was wrong, but he soon figured it out. Fussy kids, and sad mom...easy guess.
Well, next Braden tried to make me feel better, and he asked Eve "isn't you're mommy the best mom?" But then I heard her answer....it was "no."
I lost it, I ran to my room sobbing. I pleaded to Heavenly Father to help me feel some comfort. Shortly after, Eve walked in, she came to sit on the bed right next to where I was kneeling. She lifted my chin, and wiped my tears with her little index finger. She stroked the side of my face, and She said so gently, "mom, you are the best. I'm very sorry I made you sad." I replied with
"Eve, I'm sorry, but I feel like a bad mom"
She says "mom, you share your silver juice with me (diet coke in a silver can), and that's good. You make me food and sandwiches, that's good. You let me watch shows sometimes, that's good. You let me help you make cookies, that's good. See mom, you do lots that's good."
It was a perfect moment. I felt immediate comfort, this little person told me almost exactly what I needed to hear. I knew Heavenly Father sent her to heal me, and with her gentle soul and kind words, she did. I love my family and my Heavenly Father. I am going to remind myself of a saying I was told once...."they don't need perfect, they just need you".
I am so grateful for the insight God granted me, and the sweet comfort he brought through my Evie. I do my best, and that's all I can do. I have to remind myself that my kids won't remember a tidy kitchen or living room, but they will remember playing with their mom.

Twins

I am sometimes amazed at how much my girls look alike. I love it! I see Greta and have flashbacks to when Eve was that little. And I see Eve and picture Greta looking very similar to her, I can't wait to find out if she will continue to take after Eve or if she will develop her own look. Only time will tell :)
P.s. Greta is on the left and Eve on the right

Oh Eve....need I say more?

Oh my Eve, she is so funny words can't describe. She has such a dramatic personality, it really plays into her speech. some of the things she says just make me laugh out loud, and some make me cringe because I know she heard them somewhere...namely me.
At the grocery store, the kids were starting to get a little restless, and so was I. I just had 3 different people tell me "wow, you've got your hands full". Normally I just smile and agree, because let's face it, I have way more than my hands full with 3 kids 3 and under. But it's he look, the sympathetic look that says "I wouldn't trade places with you in a bazillion years" look. Anyways, mom was getting to be very "done" with the grocery store too. All of a sudden, Eve steps dead in her tracks, puts her fingers to her temples (as if someone were signaling a headache) and says "mom, can we go home? I'm getting freshed out."
"Freshed out?" I replied, I had to really think what this meant. So she says,
"Yes, mom. Freshed out. Like I feel crazy and need to go home"
Then the lightbulb turned on, "stressed out?" I said with a little giggle. And sure enough, Eve was just really "stressed out" at the store. She said it with such drama in her voice like the world was over and she just couldn't take another minute. It made me laugh enough that we could finish our errands in peace.

Eve and Graham were having a rough day. Just fighting and bickering in a big way. Finally I just separated them, and took Eve aside. I was talking to her, explaining that he really just wanted to be her friend. That He thinks she is so awesome, he just wants to play with her all the time. So she thinks about it and says, "mom, it's really hard to be his friend when he breaks everything." Ok, you've got me there, I would definitely agree with you. But how can I say that to her? Well, I can't. So I say
"do you think you could let him play anyways? Just help him learn how to play?"
"Um...I think you could mom"
Touché, I could. Ouch. She saw right through me, that I really just wanted him to be able to stay in the playroom with her downstairs so I could get a few things done in peace. She's too smart for me.

I made dinner, some kind of soup. She was not keen on the idea of soup with lots of veggies. I explained to her that she has to have her "thankful bites". In our home, you have to have 5 thankful bites to show that you're thankful to have food and that mommy made you food. So I said "Eve, you need to be thankful you have food, and be thankful mommy took the time to make you a healthy dinner."
So quickly she just responds with a raised eyebrow.(yes, my kid can do that already...yikes) and then, while stroking the side of my face gently, she replies "Mom, I'd be even More thankful if you made me chicken nuggets"
I just burst out laughing. The honesty, I have to appreciate the honesty.

3 months for Greta

This smiley girl is just getting more and more delicious by the minute. I mean really, look at that face! I can't get enough of that grin. She's just a dream baby, something magics happened with the 3rd baby, she's soooo good. I think as parents we are much more relaxed and the baby feeds off that. That, and her incredibly mellow nature, makes for a great baby experience. I just want her to stay put..not get any bigger, she's perfect right now. Smiley, oh so smiley. And sleeps a lot. 11-12 hours at night to be exact. She's getting really long, she's filled out the length of the 3-6 month pjs. She's still squeezing those chunky thighs into size 1 diapers, but doesn't look like that will last for long. She now tolerates the bath, just gives you the stink eye instead of crying like she used to. Loves swatting at toys with her feet, working on her hands. She just discovered she has hands, likes to follow them around, suck on them, and stare. But she recognizes familiar faces, and gives us big smiles. She's so close to giving me that laugh, she gets close, but then she stops. Greta, why are you holding out on me?! She sits in a bumbo seat now, and loves it, she can get a great view of her crazy siblings running around.

Halloween

Another year of staying on a theme for Halloween :) I know it may be dorky, but I LOVE when my kids match. So I figured that the two babies have no opinion on what they wear, so I would work around Eve. She mentioned her want/need to be tinkerbell many times, but when I offered Little Red Riding Hood she was all for it. Great! That is an easy one. Well turns out that having a baby and hernia surgery in the weeks before, makes it not so easy. Such is life, but it's ok because we had a blast anyway. Costumes were simple, Little Red, the big bad wolf, and of course, Granny. Graham was not about to keep his wolf hat on for more than a millisecond, so we snapped a quick pic while I had him distracted with a snack.
Due to our travels to Utah the week prior to Halloween, we missed our ward Trunk-or-treat. But we took Eve out trick or treating on the actual Halloween night. It was perfect, mid 60's clear night. Thanks to Hurricane sandi, and a freak blizzard her last two Halloweens were cancelled. So this really was her first real Halloween. She came out with tones of candy, so a successful Halloween it was :)

Family Pictures 10-13

One thing on our "must do" list while in Utah was family pictures. They were amazing at this photography studio 'camera shy' in South Jordan. They were so great with the kids, Graham is especially hard toget to look at the camera let alone smile!

Poor Greta, she's so very loved by her siblings, it often leaves her squished....

We were just joking around in this picture, but it turned up In the finished product. It always gives us a good laugh.

trip to Utah - part 2

The rest of our trip we got to visit Braden's grandparents, shop, get family pictures, visit friends, and just play. Having Braden to ourselves for a few days was such a treat! This is Grandpa Ralph, and Graham Ralph (little Ralphie) on his lap.

I FINALLY got around to getting my wedding dress dry cleaned and boxed. Quite a few years late, but better late than never right? Eve had a lot of fun with it, she wore my veil for quite a while before I had to get everything packed up. She marveled at the beading and little pretty details, it was fun to reminisce and relive that beautiful day. She told me she wants to wear my princess dress and princess hat when she gets bigger. To be honest, nothing could make me happier :)

Trip to Utah - the cabin

Our trip to Utah started out right, a relaxing few days down at the cabin. Weather wasn't too bad, and it was sunny every day. Braden and his dad got their Deer quite early into the trip so it freed up their time to hang out with us. The kids absolutely loved it, they had room to run around both indoors and outdoors, it was a nice change for them. This is my kind of "roughing it", hot showers and heat, it's basically a home surrounded by peace and quiet, no cell reception...bliss.
The kids loved the 4 wheelers, Eve just talked and talked the whole time, although I couldn't hear 90% of what she was saying. Graham fella sleep shortly into our ride, I guess it was the bumpy ride? Either way, we all benefited from a little fresh air. Being from an area so heavily populated, we had almost forgotten what fresh air is like! We had a blast, roasted marshmallows, over ate, caught a lizard, and enjoyed quality family time.

First Smiles

Eve did it again, she was the first to get Greta's smile. Lucky little thing she is, both Graham and Greta have saved them for her. Must be a sign of how great a big sister she is :)

2 months for Greta

Well, I'm a little late with the post, as to be expected with 3 kids under 4 years old. Greta is growing up quickly, and as it saddens me to see her grow, I love how alert she is getting and much more responsive. She responds to voices more now, and likes to look at her toys. She's a mellow little thing, and is very quiet. Not often do you hear her cry, thank heavens. She's quite an exceptional baby.
She's 23 inches long now, 50-75th percentile. And 11.5 lbs, also 50th percentile, which means she is back on her birth weight curve. She sleeps extremely well for a 2 month old, this little gem did almost 8 hours last night!!! Can you believe it?! She just might be my best sleeper yet. Hallelujah! She gave us her first smile this past couple of weeks, and just as the last, Eve was the one to get it out if her.
Speaking of Eve, Greta is looking more and more like her everyday. There are times that I see Greta in one of Eve's old pair of pjs and I just get flashbacks of when Eve was a baby that size. Time will tell, but as for now she's looking very much like her sister.

Ode to Eve

Best big sister award goes to Eve. She's been exceptional with our newest addition. She was good with Graham, but the whole having a real baby int he house was new to her then. Now, she's a little pro at it. She's so gentle with her, and although she can get a bit rough when she's hyper or excited, she really knows how to be tender.
She has done so much better with Graham as well. Before, he was such an aggravation to her, he was still a baby and didn't understand how to play with her, and such made her quite frustrated. I'm not sure if it's seeing teeny weeny Greta, but somehow the gap between Eve and G has gotten smaller. She's more patient with him, she interacts so much better with him, and includes him much much more. He seems like less of a baby brother, and more of simply a younger brother. Does that make any sense? I love seeing/hearing them play together, and although things usually end with one either screaming or in tears the time prior to that is heavenly. I am really looking forward to how Greta will fit in the mix, but at the same time I want her to be a baby forever.
Eve surprises me every day, she's such a passionate little person, I marvel at how much emotion can fit in such a small being. When she is happy, she's so incredibly happy, and so goes the opposite side.
She's understanding things so much more, especially aspects of the gospel. She says her prayers all by herself, and sometimes says the sweetest most unpredicted things. She's got such a king heart, her prayers are always for the welfare of others, it is so humbling to hear. Don't get me wrong, occasionally a "bless me I can get a new tinkerbell doll" or "please bless Graham at he won't steL my toys" slips in there, but hey, she's only 3. I would be more surprised if those things didn't enter her mind.
She's also decided that she can now tie her own shoes. Impressive, right? What's impressive, is that she can cause such a complex series of knots that it takes me eons of time to untie. But she feels so proud when she does it herself, it's too adorable to stop. She can do bath time all by herself, you get the tub ready, and wash her hair, that's it. She plays and can do the rest herself. She cleas up her toys, drains the tub, dries, get dressed, lotion (sometimes) and can sort of brush her own hair. It's soo nice!
The big girl is in dance this year, and she loves it! It's the highlight of her week.msnes doing really well, and she listens to her teacher much better than she does me haha.
Some of my new favorite Eve quotes:
*if I have something she can't have eg. Diet coke, she says "but mom, you have to share with me, Jesus says so"
*i hear from the backseat while driving "c'mon lady, let's goooo!" Apparently when I mumble under my breath she hears every word.
*in a public bathroom stall "mom, I need my privacy." So I turn around and face the door. Then I hear (with thick attitude along wih an eye roll) "mom, that means you need to get out of here, I will tell you when I'm done"....excuse me? She certainly has high demands for a 3 year old.
*when we have to leave somewhere or go to bed "please mom, I need 5 more minutes! Ok, maybe only 2.... Can I please have 3 more minutes? I promise to be good!" As always, everything is a negotiation.
*when she's frustrated "ahh, I want to be the mom so I can be the boss!!" That's right Eve, when you're the mom, you can be the boss.

Pony Up

I decided October was the perfect time to "pony up" and make a donation for those fighting cancer. Due to havi baby and surgery, I couldn't run a race, or volunteer my time, so I decided to donate my hair. I've done it before, but it held a special meaning this time. This past year my Aunt Marilyn was diagnosed with ovarian and peritoneal cancer. After chemo, time, and a lot of fighting, she's doing really well (knock on wood) and we couldn't be more thrilled.
Adios hair, I wasn't using the extra 9+ inches anyways :)

Greta is 6 weeks

Little miss Greta turned 6 weeks old (a week late to post I know) and it is great. She is still my little slice of heaven. Ok, my other two are also slices of heaven, just smaller slices sometimes. She is gaining handsomely, about 9 lbs and a bit, not exactly sure. She has gotten herself on a slight routine lately, nothing exact, but I can at least have a slight idea of how evenings and nights go.
With my oldest, I was much more concerned with schedules. Waking Eve to eat, making sure she had her exact times for nap/awake time, leaving activities because "it's nap time! I must get her home to nap only in her crib!" With only one baby, it's easy to dwell and sweat the small stuff, because you give all your time and energy to this little bundle. It's just natural for you as a mother to do so. You want everything to be perfect and make sure you do your best always, even if it inevitably leaves you frazzled and exhausted.
Now, having 3 kids, it forces you to prioritize. You are in survival mode the majority of the time, let alone thinking about schedules. She sleeps when she sleeps, and she's awake when she's awake. Now that she's gaining well, I never wake my sleeping baby. I barely get out of the house, let alone leave my precious outings for her nap. She naps well in her car seat, swing, crib, really anywhere her siblings can't touch her, so I let her nap wherever.
She's a great baby, not fussy, great sleeper, mellow, and so delicious. She is starting to get more chub, and I'm loving it. She sleeps one 5.5 hour stretch at night, anywhere from 11 or midnight to 4 or 5. It's bliss. The two hours before her long stretch is so nice, the house is quiet, and it's just our alone time. I get one on one with Eve and Graham during the day, but nights are for Greta and I. She loves her pacifier, but doesn't need it to sleep thank goodness. Once she falls asleep she spits it right out, that's helpful because then I know she's definitely asleep :) she just outgrew all of her newborn clothes....no lies, I wept a little. This is such a precious stage of life, I think no matter what, you're sad to let it go.

Graham is 15 months

This guy is getting so big, without my consent. He's 15 months already, which means lots of things. He's running all over, ALL the time, and only 3 more months until he can go to nursery :)
But he is changing so much, my mellow "go with the flow" baby suddenly has an opinion. He used to eat whatever you put in front of him. Now, you have to be creative. He will still eat most things, but he has to think he's doing it himself. For example, the bowl of oatmeal has to sit on his tray, and he gets his own spoon to hold and try to feed himself with. Meanwhile you sneak in bites when he's not looking, or charmingly singing exaggerated versions of Old McDonald and the Wheels on the Bus. It's a science as of late. But he still eats a lot, I mean a lot. This morning he had a bowl of oatmeal, piece of toast, yogurt and then drank a good portion of grandma's smoothie. It's crazy. But I guess you have to eat that much to have the 95th percentile locked up. Just had his check up, 95th for head 95th for height, and about 75th for weight. He is a tank. 32 inches long, he is only 4 inches short of his sister that is 2.5 years his senior. Haha, she will soon regret the bullying that has transpired over the past year, he's catching up quickly. He is 26.5 lbs, and only 3 lbs lighter than Eve.

He is so incredibly busy, really no words can adequately describe just how busy he is. He can climb anything. I left him for about 3 mins and came to find him climbed up standing in my bathroom sink picking all the blossoms off my decorative branches on the counter. He can get on top of the kitchen table in mere seconds. And any chair, stair, table, dresser, seems to have this cosmic power that lures him in, he must climb it. And if you get in the way, heaven help you.

Fun fact, did you know rats can squeeze their way through a hole the size of a quarter? Yeah, Graham's a lot like that. But we sure love him, he is such a sweetheart. Aside from the boyish tendencies, he's such a great toddler. He is absolutely obsessed with his sisters. He wants to snuggle that baby all the time, she's never safe. Leaving her on the couch means Graham standing right next to it, giving her his version of soft pats and hugs...it usually ends in a fussy newborn, but that's ok, I'm glad he loves her. He loves every opportunity to hold her (with protective help of course) and when it's time to take her, well he gets this Kung fu grip on her like I've never seen. He's going to be a very protective big brother :) he stopped stealing her pacifiers, he now shoves them in her mouth to the point where she gags a bit, but he is always so proud of himself when he does it. He started playing with Eve's baby dolls it's the cutest thing ever. We love you Graham, even if your shenanigans have shaved at least 10 years off my life.
Keeping it classy at the Edwards home :)

Surgery

I've been a little MIA lately, that is mostly to be blamed on my surgery. A few weeks ago I had a hernia repair surgery completed laparoscopically. The doctor/surgeon wasn't exactly sure what caused them, but he seems to think its due to my pregnancies.
So 4 weeks postpartum, I went under. Surgery went well, although they found it was a bit more complicated than they had anticipated. I had an umbilical hernia, and a few inches higher had a GI hernia. But, once they got in there they found the space between them was a channel of more hernias, although smaller, they formed a "zipper" as the surgeon put it. So more mesh was placed, and a few extra incisions. I'm glad we got to it when we did.
Recovery was rough, I had no idea just how much you use your abdominal muscles. I also had no idea it would take this long to recover, they tell you it takes at least 4-6 weeks, but I always figured they were over shooting it...they weren't. 3 weeks out and I'm just starting to feel somewhat normal again. I am still limited in my activities, but I am able to softly laugh now, and I no longer want to die every time I sneeze...stupid allergies. After 2 weeks I could start taking care of Greta, picking her up and feeding her, as long as she's propped up and I'm not holding her for long periods.
It's been great in some ways my mom has taken such great care of he kids and I, I have been so blessed. She's run the household better than I do at my best, I have so much to learn. So while I'm laying in bed recovering, she taught Graham how to do stairs, Eve how to navigate her way through the gospel apps in the iPad, and many other things on my to-do list I never got to. It's been a very humbling experience having people help me and do things for me, being stuck watching. The ward was incredibly helpful in organizing meals to come to the house, it was so so helpful.
Still unable to lift Graham or Eve, and it will probably be a while. But I'm so thankful for the progress I've made, and looking forward to getting back to normal :)

The Big 5

It's been 5 amazing years. I love our anniversary, I get to reflect on pictures and moments from that wonderful day that changed my life forever, for the better. It's crazy to see what we have accomplished in 5 years, and how we have grown together. I love this guy more and more each day, and I love our life together. It's nothing glamorous or elaborate, but I love our simple routine and love filled life we have built.
Luckily my mom was in town for our anniversary so we could enjoy a dinner out. Thanks to two babies very close together, our last two anniversaries have been spent with newborns and oddly enough, me having mastitis. We had a good laugh about that, and are looking forward to next year when things aren't so crazy :) I love that we took our picture in front of our picture of the Logan Temple. Eve calls it the "castle where  mommy and daddy got married, and mommy was a princess". She thinks the big white dress and veil makes me a princess...she's so darling, I love her.

Greta turns 2 weeks old

Wow, 2 weeks old. It has been a bit of a roller coaster. It seems to have gone by so fast, too fast. But reflecting back, lots has happened. Around her 5 day check up, things looked great, she had gained weight, was a very content and very sleepy baby. Two amazing things right? Wrong.
She had initially gained weight, however, due to the excessive sleepiness nursing was always a bit if a challenge. She was very jaundiced, but that wasn't out of the ordinary, I guess. Well, we had to have a follow up visit at the pediatrician s office, just protocol for how jaundiced she looked. So two days later we went.
Well, she had lost weight. Uh oh. So they did a blood test to check her bilirubin levels and veal the jaundice. So we amped up her feeding to try to get her to gain. Well the next day, we got a call. Jaundice was up, so we went back. Lost more weight, and took another blood test. This time as they took the test, Greta only yelled for a small second, then she slept through it. Turns out she's so weak, that's why she had a hard time eating, nursing was too exhausting for her, then my supply was going down, and causing her jaundice to spike up even further.
So we started supplementing, and I started pumping and giving her what I could with a bottle. But that wasn't enough, she had still lost weight, so we had to go spend over night at the hospital. Greta was put under the UV lights to help her body get rid of the jaundice. Apparently it's just a domino effect, as the jaundice goes up, their energy goes down, causing them to eat less, causing their jaundice to go up, etc.
so we spent the night waking every 2 hours to feed, but keeping her in the uv box or tanning bed as I like to call it. The poor thing was so sleepy, it took her about 45 mins just to get through 2 oz. The nurses were so helpful, and thrilled to have a newborn in the pediatric wing. And I guess I said I wanted another day at the hospital right? The help, the room service and all that. Well, I'd give it all up for a healthy baby, obviously.

But it all worked out, after about 24 hours in the hospital her bilirubin went way way down and the doc let us come home. We just had to monitor very closely how much she was eating.
So now at 2 weeks, she is back to herself :) She is up beyond birthweight! 7 lbs 8 oz, and just over 20 inches long. She can now take a bottle much easier, and only getting formula about once or twice a day. I finally got the green light to stop waking her up at night to feed her, let her wake herself up....hallelujah !!! Just last night, she let me get a 3 hour stretch of sleep, it's a miracle. Her color is much better, still a bit yellow in her eyes and face, but the doctors think that will pass soon.
Greta had her first bath, and screamed for most of it, typical newborn. But we still had to document :)
It's been amazing having her in our life. I never could have imagined having 3 kids, but now we can't imagine life without her. She's amazing. Eve is absolutely obsessed with her, she sings songs about how much she lives her baby Greta, and how sweet and small she is. She wants to hold her ALL the time, the second I come downstairs from feeding her, Eve dashes to the bathroom and comes out saying, "I washed my hands! You can smell them! (That's how we check) Can I hold Greta now?!" It's so cute how much she adores her. Graham, well, he doesn't really get it yet. He is interested by her, he gets this mischievous look, and tries to smack her, but I think he does that because he gets a reaction out of us. Other than that, he's more interested in her car seat laying around than Greta.

Greta, you are delicious!
